Conversations with Friends: Who's in the cast and what's the release date?
12th April 2022

FOLLOWING the success of Sally Rooney's successful television adaptation of one of her novels, the author has another book coming to television.

In the wake of the acclaim of Normal People, BBC Three and Hulu ordered a TV adaptation of Conversations With Friends, another book by Sally.

Who is in the cast of Conversations With Friends?

In February 2021, Joe Alwyn, Jemima Kirke, Sasha Lane, and Alison Oliver were named as the actors portraying the book's main characters.

Conversations With Friends, similar to Normal People, includes a small cast.

Oliver, a recent graduate of Dublin's Lir Academy, where Normal People actor Paul Mescal also graduated, will portray Frances.

Lane will portray Bobbi, with Alwyn and Kirke playing Nick and Melissa, respectively.

What is the series based on?

Thanks to the popularity of her first two novels about coming of age, Rooney has become one of the most well-known authors in the literary world.

Rooney’s debut novel Conversations with Friends follows best friends and former lovers Frances and Bobbi, who recite poetry together at a Dublin university.

The friendship they form with an older married couple, journalist Melissa and actor Nick, puts their tight-knit dynamic in jeopardy.

While Bobbi defends Melissa and distances herself from Frances, Frances and Nick have a hidden romantic relationship.

Both friends take sides in the other couple's marriage, putting their own relationship at risk.

When does Conversations with Friends premiere on Hulu?

On April 12, 2022, the official trailer was released and gave viewers a sneak peek of what to expect.

The show is slated for a simultaneous release on May 15, 2022, through Hulu and BBC Three.

However, many stills of the characters on a European vacation, as well as a look of Oliver and Alwyn in character, have been released via Vanity Fair.

Conversations with Friends is directed by Irish filmmaker Lenny Abrahamson – who is best known for his film Room – and written by screenwriter Alice Birch, who worked with Rooney on the screenplay for Normal People.

Ahead of the premiere, Lenny told The Hollywood Reporter: "Conversations is really a coming-of-age story."

"Centering on Frances, who is trying to figure herself out… it’s prepared to challenge the viewer’s own sense of what is good or right in various situations."
