A British woman, 60, has opened up about being left with nothing after gifting her Sri Lankan toyboy husband with £100,000.
Diane Peebles, from Edinburgh, revealed that her romance turned into a nightmare after discovering Priyanjana De Zoysa, 26, already had an 18-year-old wife.
Despite admitting that she "felt like a mug", Diane insisted that "you do silly things when you’re in love".
Hotel worker Priyanjana, who she fell in love with while on holiday in Sri Lanka, was shot dead last year.
Diane believes that the men who murdered him had tried to take cash from him after seeing all the things he had received from her.
Diane has only been able to return to Britain last month – 18 months after he was killed.
She explained that her husband’s family would not let her return and instead demanded her money.
Appearing on This Morning today, she told Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes that she found out about her husband’s younger wife when she turned up for tea.
"All my friends and family told me not to go over [to live with him in Sri Lanka]," she revealed.
"But I thought he loved me, and I loved him. You do silly things when you’re in love."
Diane first met Priyanjana in November 2011 and married him in June the following year.
In total, she gave her husband £100,000 for their house in Sri Lanka and to buy him a minibus.
She said: "I’ve got nothing. I’ve got a very small pension from my old work, that’s what I’m living on.
"I’ve still got the house, even though it’s not in my name. I’ll need to go back to see if they’ll let me sell that."
Diane was only able to return to the UK after a pal sent her money for a plane ticket.
She warned others not to get into the same situation: "Don’t get involved with the locals, because they’re all very poor,’ she said.
"A lot of them are looking to marry European women, because they think we’re all very rich. I wasn’t very rich – but in their eyes, I was rich."
