WARNING: This article contains major spoilers from Bridgerton season 1
Dame Julie is the voice of Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton, the scandal sheet writer who seems to be know all about everyone who matters in society.
Her voice features in every single episode of Bridgerton with all the most salacious pieces of gossip of the day.
Dame Julie’s putdowns as Lady Whistledown are every big as withering as those uttered from the acerbic tongue of Downton Abbey’s Dowager Countess.
Lady Whistledown also seems to be very knowledgeable about the ways of the world and her nom de plume suggests she is an older lady.
The author’s identity remains unknown to the audience and the characters pretty much throughout the whole of season one.
But by getting Dame Julie to voice Lady Whistledown, viewers are thrown wildly off the scent until the very end.
Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) is even tasked by the Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) to unmasked Lady Whistledown on her behalf.
However, Eloise simply has a series of misfires including suspecting a servant before her theories are torn apart.
At the end of season one, viewers learn it’s actually Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) who has been writing the sheets under the pseudonym of Lady Whistledown.
In Quinn’s novels, readers don’t find out Lady Whistledown’s true identity until later on but perhaps for dramatic purposes, the producers of the Netflix show decided to reveal it earlier.
Although Dame Julie’s voice is featured in the show, the acclaimed actress is not featured on screen as Penelope is the one writing Lady Whisteldown.
