There was a devastating double death in this week’s Casualty finale as paramedics Fenisha Khatri (Olivia D’Lima) and Lev Malinovsky (Uriel Emil) lost their lives following a train collision.
Due to marry Fenisha that very day, Ethan Hardy (George Rainsford) was traumatised to realise he had been in the room next door as she lay dying. How could you, Casualty!
But of course, it’s not the first time a continuing drama has delivered a tragic outcome to a wedding. Tissues at the ready, as we take a look at the most heartbreaking nuptials in soapland.
Bradley Branning in EastEnders
Instead of toasting to their future upon remarrying, young couple Bradley (Charlie Clements) and Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) were trying to escape the police, who suspected Bradley over Archie Mitchell’s (Larry Lamb) murder.
In a tense live episode, Stacey screamed in horror when her beloved Bradley fell to his death from the Queen Vic roof. The nation gasped once, then twice as the revelation followed that it was actually Stacey who killed Archie.
Max Cunningham in Hollyoaks
After marrying Steph Dean (Carley Stenson), Max (Matt Littler) stepped out to collect a wedding present. Soon after, he rushed to protect little brother Tom (Ellis Hollins) from an oncoming car, taking the hit instead.
Best mate Sam ‘O.B’ O’Brien (Darren Jeffries) was by Max’s side as he passed away. ‘Tell Steph, today was the best day of my life’ the groom declared. Cue sobbing all round.
Lisa Dingle in Emmerdale
Zak (Steve Halliwell) and Lisa Dingle (Jane Cox) married again in 2019 with a lively Woolpack celebration. Terminally ill bride Lisa then popped home to change, but fell into a peaceful sleep and slipped away.
Zak and their daughter Belle (Eden Taylor-Draper) were inconsolable, and viewers wept as she begged for just a few minutes more with her mum.
Rana Habeeb in Coronation Street
Rana’s (Bhavna Limbachia) delayed arrival to the altar left her fiancée Kate Connor (Faye Brookes) nervous. Word soon reached her that the roof of the factory had caved in – and her bride was trapped in the office.
Nurse Rana was left fatally injured, and in no doubt that she was dying. Kate arrived to exchange vows and rings with Rana before she passed away, leaving us in tears.
Ronnie Mitchell in EastEnders
Ronnie (Samantha Womack) and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) were another couple to say ‘I do’ for the second time. After a perfect day, Ronnie and sister Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons) had their own after-party.
After mixing drugs and alcohol, Roxy failed to come up for air after jumping into the hotel pool. Ronnie was weighed down by her wedding dress when she went in to help; and the double drowning resulted in two of the most mourned soap deaths ever.
Glen Thomas in Casualty
Hospital porter Glen (Owain Arthur) and nurse Robyn Miller (Amanda Henderson) became husband and wife, only to end up in a car crash shortly afterwards.
They survived – but Glen, who had a brain tumour, revealed he didn’t have much time left. In emotional scenes, he spent his final hours at the hospital with his wife and their baby daughter Charlotte.
Jesse Donovan in Hollyoaks
Jesse (Luke Jerdy) was all smiles when he married Courtney Campbell (Amy Conachan). Then he overheard a shocking secret about his sister Grace Black (Tamara Wall).
Jesse drank heavily to block out his distress, but collapsed and died of alcohol poisoning. It was a harrowing watch, and the sudden passing of such a delightful, happy-go-lucky character left viewers stunned.
Essie Di Lucca in Holby City
Popular nurse Essie (Kaye Wragg) had recently learned her cancer was terminal. But rather than focus on what was to come, Essie wanted to marry partner Sacha Levy (Bob Barrett) as soon as possible.
She asked Adrian ‘Fletch’ Fletcher (Alex Walkinshaw) to give her away. But Essie passed away on her way to the hospital chapel, just minutes before the wedding – and we’re still not over the unfairness of it all.
