Alex Jones reveals why she was snubbed by The Wheel

The One Show presenter Alex Jones couldn’t resist taking a cheeky dig at Michael McIntyre when she finally appeared on his hit BBC Saturday night show The Wheel.

Although the show is now in its fourth season, Alex has never appeared as one of the celebrities despite being one of the biggest stars on the BBC.

Welcoming her to the programme Michael said: “First time on the show. We’re thrilled you finally made it.”

“Yes, I know,” she responded. “I was pregnant last time and they said, ‘No it [the wheel] goes too fast’.”

Alex wasn’t exaggerating when she explained why she hadn’t appeared.

The show sees a contestant at the centre of a wheel answering questions on a category they choose.

A celebrity helps them but instead of choosing who they want, the wheel decides as it does a dizzying spin, which could have been detrimental to Alex while she was expecting.

However, despite her genuine reason, Michael still decided to try and goad her saying: “You say last time [series three]. There were two series before that…”

Alex was having none of it and cheekily quipped: “Yeah I was waiting to see how it [the show] did.”

Fellow celebrity guest Sue Perkins burst out laughing at the interaction.

For his part, Michael took it quite magnanimously announcing to the audience: “Well that is a ringing endorsement. We’ve got a hit show ladies and gentlemen.” His remark was greeted by loud cheers from the studio audience.

Alex appears on tonight’s show alongside other celebrities and as part of the game, each one is deemed an expert on a certain subject.

Alex claims to be an expert on CBeebies, Paralympian and Strictly Come Dancing star Ellie Simmonds on swimming, TV presenter Paddy McGuinness on karate, Good Morning Britain’s Ranvir Singh is an expert on politics, podcaster Rosie Ramsey is an expert on musicals, and comedian Seann Walsh is an expert on Batman.

Meanwhile, the aforementioned Sue Perkins is fittingly an expert on cake given that she was one of the original hosts of Great British Bake Off alongside her friend Mel Giedroyc.

As well as presenting the show Michael created it and it has become a huge hit. An American version launched in December 2022 but was cancelled in June this year. There are also Dutch and Finnish versions of the programme currently running.

The Wheel is on BBC One at 8.35pm tonight.
