A Russian hockey player has died after being hit in the head with a puck during a game, team and league officials said Tuesday.

Timur Faizutdinov, a 19-year-old defenseman for Dynamo St. Petersburg’s junior team, was struck Friday during a Junior Hockey League playoff game against Loko Yaroslavl in Yaroslavl.

Faizutdinov was rushed to a hospital in serious condition and doctors “fought for his life for three days,” but were unable to save him, team officials said in a statement Tuesday.

The team’s upcoming quarterfinal game Tuesday will be held in Faizutdinov’s memory and will start with a moment of silence for the fallen defenseman.

“Forever at Dynamo,” the team’s statement continued. “Forever in our hearts.”

The league also posted a video tribute to Faizutdinov Tuesday, showing his teammates on the ice above an image of him on a large video screen.

“In memory of Timur Faizutdinov,” a tweet posted by the league read. “We remember.”

The Russian Hockey Federation said Faizutdinov was in intensive care following the head injury.

“The RIHF extends its deepest condolences to Timur’s family and friends,” the organization said in a statement.

Other upcoming games for the Kontinental Hockey League will also have a moment of silence for Faizutdinov, his team said.
