PDC blasted for ‘unfair’ Fallon Sherrock decision ahead of World Championship
13th December 2022

The PDC's decision to award Fallon Sherrock a place at the upcoming World Darts Championship has been blasted by Dutch veteran Vincent van der Voort.

Sherrock, who famously reached the third round at Alexandra Palace in 2020, was pipped to the second automatic place via the Women’s Series by rising star Beau Greaves and looked set to miss the tournament.

However, a late decision by the PDC saw them grant Sherrock a spot courtesy of winning the Women’s World Matchplay in July. The decision has not gone down well with a section of fans, who believe the governing body have moved the goalposts just to accommodate the sport’s best-known female.

Many current and former players, including Phil Taylor, have backed the decision. However, 28th seed Van der Voort, who could face Sherrock’s boyfriend Cameron Menzies in the second round, isn’t one of them.

He does not blame Sherrock for taking the opportunity but has hit out at the PDC, saying they do “so many things wrong”.

“It’s good for the World Championship because she gets massive numbers but is it fair? No,” he told Online Darts TV. “You have to make up the numbers before that. If they let two, three, four, five women in, that’s no problem. But at the last moment, I think that’s wrong.

“If there’s someone to blame, it’s the PDC because they should have been more open about it and said the winner of the Women’s World Matchplay was in [back in the summer].

“You can’t blame her, that’s for sure, but it’s wrong how they put it out there. But that’s the PDC, they do so many things wrong.”

Van der Voort believes many players feel the same way but are reluctant to say so in public.

“100 per cent,” he added. “I’ve been in practice rooms and they’re all complaining and then Matt Porter [PDC chief executive] walks in and everybody is saying how great darts is, how perfect it is.

“I know how it works and I can’t blame them because they’re after the World Series, they’re after the Premier League. They don’t want to upset them [the PDC], but sometimes it’s frustrating.

“I like Fallon, she’s a great player and has done so many good things for darts in general. But if you don’t qualify, you don’t qualify.

“If you’re in, it should be on the right criteria and not because ‘you’re not in but we find a way to get you in’. Again, it’s not her fault, the PDC should be more clear about it.”
