NEWCASTLE gaffer Steve Bruce is preparing a £20million bid for Nice star Allan Saint-Maximin.
The Toon boss has confirmed his interest in signing the highly-rated winger days after splashing club-record £40m on Brazil forward Joelinton.
Newcastle have so far seen a £14m offer for Saint-Maximin, 22, rejected by Nice.
And Bruce has admitted that the Frenchman is not yet close to moving to Tyneside.
But the Toon boss is set to come back with a £20m bid, hoping the Ligue 1 side will sanction the deal.
Bruce said: "I don’t think it’s on the verge of happening.
"It’s somebody we have looked at, it’s somebody we have identified. We’ll see what happens."
Saint-Maximin scored six goals and grabbed five assists in 36 appearances for Nice last season.
Meanwhile, Bruce has shot down Manchester United's hopes of signing Newcastle starlet Sean Longstaff, 21.
He said: "We don’t want to sell our best young players, that’s for sure.
"So that won’t happen. I am very confident of that."
