This year's meeting is typically competitive, with the likes of Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore set to take a strong book of rides.

We preview the five Group 1 races and pick out our best bets from a mouthwatering card on Saturday.

1.30pm Al Quoz Sprint

Charlie Appleby's SPACE BLUES will be very tough to beat in the first Group 1 on the card.

The exciting sprinter rattled up four straight wins in Britain and France last season and made a winning reappearance in Saudi Arabia five weeks ago.

He looks a cut above the remainder of the field and should have too much up his sleeve for Charlie Hills' Equilateral, who has been in great nick in the UAE this winter but who is a level below top-class.

Hills also runs the talented Khaadem, who will love the fast ground and has solid place claims, as does Final Song.

At a price, keep an eye out for US runner Extravagant Kid. Ryan Moore is an interesting jockey booking and the horse has some smart form to his name.

SELECTION: Space Blues

2.40pm Golden Shaheen

With this 6f sprint run on dirt, it's no surprise the Americans have a good recent record, and WILDMAN JACK can make it four straight wins for runners from across the pond.

Doug O'Neill's speedster is versatile and can mix it up on both the turf and the dirt, but he was hugely impressive when winning a Santa Anita Grade 3 in his prep for this in late January.

He is a horse who is still on the up and he can get the better of Yaupon, who was beaten favourite in the Breeders' Cup Sprint at Keeneland in November.

Japanese contenders Copano Kicking and Matera Sky fought out a tight finish in Saudi Arabia last month and should be bang there again, with the latter fancied to reverse the Riyadh form.

SELECTION: Wildman Jack (each-way)

3.30pm Dubai Turf

This represents a gilt-edged opportunity for LORD NORTH to bag a second career Group 1.

John Gosden's runner was an impressive winner of the Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot last season and went on to run well in defeat at York and in America.

He is clear on ratings and has a good record fresh, so provided Frankie Dettori can navigate a trouble-free route from stall 10 he should be hard to beat.

That said, the old boy Lord Glitters comes here in red-hot form and should not be underestimated.

There isn't a great deal of depth down the field, though Japanese runners on the turf are always worth a second look and it wouldn't be a surprise to see classy five-year-old Vin De Garde in contention in the closing stages.

SELECTION: Lord North

4.10pm Sheema Classic

This looks the race of the day on paper, with three horses dominant at the top of the betting.

Given the class of horse Aidan O'Brien has run in this race over the years, he doesn't have a particularly good record, which is a concern for fans of Mogul who could be vulnerable on his first run of the year.

Mishriff was a gutsy winner of the Saudi Cup last time out and steps up in trip on his return to turf. A mile-and-a-half should be within range, but it's by no means a given.

Besides, both horses may struggle to give weight to the top Japanese mare CHRONO GENESIS.

She was a gutsy winner of the prestigious Arima Kinen over this 1m4f distance in her homeland in December, she receives 4lbs from the boys and she loves fast ground. She has plenty in her favour.

SELECTION: Chrono Genesis

4.50pm Dubai World Cup

There have been some stellar renewals of this race in recent years – sadly this season's offering isn't up to scratch.

It looks a golden opportunity for MYSTIC GUIDE to bag his connections a huge payday and give Godolphin a third straight win in the race.

The five-year-old was a close second in a big Grade 1 at Belmont in the autumn and warmed up for this with a ready win at Oaklawn four weeks ago.

The main danger is undoubtedly the consistent Jesus' Team, who was second to the high-class Knicks Go in the Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream last time out.

But at a price SLEEPY EYES TODD isn't out of this. He was two places behind Jesus' Team and staying on well in the Pegasus having been given too much to do.

Hat-trick seeker Salute The Soldier won a trial for this last time out and is the pick of the remainder.

SELECTION: Mystic Guide (win), Sleepy Eyes Todd (each-way)
