Bill Belichick won’t let the Patriots go down like this
It has been a rough year for Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots, who in their first season without Tom Brady are going to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2008. In fact, Monday night was the first home game in the history of Gillette Stadium – which opened in 2002 – in which the Patriots were already eliminated from postseason contention.
The game did not go well for New England, with the Buffalo Bills jumping out to a 24-9 lead before halftime. On the first play of the second half, Bills tight end Dawson Knox made a toe-tapping catch along the sideline. Belichick apparently received advice from his coaching staff that the play was worth a challenge, so he threw the red flag.
But replay review showed that Knox clearly had two feet in bounds. Belichick appeared to see this for himself, and when he did, the ESPN broadcast caught him Gronk spiking the sideline phone against a bench.
The coach’s frustration carried over into the postgame press conference, where he was asked about the challenge.
“Obviously he made the catch. It was a good catch,” Belichick said. “I mean, it was a good call. It was a good catch. And the challenge was obviously not successful, as it shouldn’t have been.”
The Bills ended up winning the game 38-9, as QB Josh Allen threw for 320 yards and four touchdowns.
