Best of the West College Football Top 25: Oregon Ducks look like Clemson, while Pac-12 is starting to resemble ACC. And not in a good way.
20th September 2021

The good news for the Pac-12? Oregon just might be the new Clemson. Less good? The rest of the conference is starting to seriously resemble the ACC. And not in a good way.

The Ducks (3-0), 48-7 winners over Stony Brook this past weekend, remain the unanimous No. 1 in the latest installment of The Denver Post’s Best of the West College Football Top 25.

But for the rest of the Pac-12, and for college football teams along the Front Range, Week 3 was a mixed bag. While post-Clay Helton USC, Washington and Stanford all won big, the circuit went 0-4 collectively, head-to-head, against the Big Ten (0-1, thanks to CU getting stomped at home by Minnesota), the Big Sky (0-1, with Northern Arizona winning at Arizona) and the Mountain West (Fresno State over UCLA, San Diego State over Utah).

Locally, CSU (1-2) carried the flag for the state with a surprising 22-6 win at Toledo, which moved the Rams up to 20th in the poll after debuting at No. 25 a week ago. CU’s Gophers gaffe dropped them 10 spots, to 18th down from eighth, while Air Force’s home loss to Utah State pushed the Zoomies down from No. 7 to No. 13.

The Buffs (1-2) and Rams face major road tests on Saturday, visiting Arizona State (2-1) and Iowa (3-0), respectively. The Falcons (2-1) host Florida Atlantic while Wyoming (3-0), now the highest-ranked team along the Front Range, visits Connecticut.

The Denver Post Best of the West College Football poll each Monday ranks the top 25 FBS programs from the Front Range to the Pacific Ocean, as culled from the Pac-12, the Mountain West and BYU.

Post columnist Sean Keeler (@SeanKeeler), Post deputy sports editor Matt Schubert (@MattDSchubert) and Post reporter Kyle Fredrickson (@KyleFredrickson) vote on the top 25.

The rest of the latest rankings follow, with in-state squads listed in bold:
