Atletico Madrid 2 Liverpool 3: Late Salah penalty wins thriller after Griezmann scores two and sees red for horror kick
19th October 2021

ANTOINE GRIEZMANN scored twice AND was sent off as Liverpool beat Atletico Madrid 3-2 in a Champions League classic.

The Frenchman saw red in the second half for a horror boot into the face of Roberto Firmino having previously hauled his side back into the game with a brace in the first period.

Mohamed Salah continued his remarkable run of form by becoming the first Liverpool player in history to score in nine consecutive games when his deflected effort put the visitors in front after just eight minutes.

And Naby Keita doubled the Reds advantage before the quarter of an hour mark, sensationally volleying home from the edge of the box.

But Griezmann then came on the scene in the 20th minute as he flicked a cross-shot past Alisson.

Just 14 minutes later Atletico were level as the man on loan from Barcelona scampered onto a through ball and smartly tucked it away as the home crowd erupted.

But Griezmann then saw red and Liverpool were galvanised by the extra man advantage as they retook the lead, with Salah converting from the spot in the 78th minute after Mario Hermoso needlessly brought down Diogo Jota.

Atletico then felt they had a penalty of their own inside the final 10 minutes when Jose Maria Gimenez went down from a collision with Jota.

But the referee overturned his decision after going to the monitor and Liverpool held on for a dramatic victory.
