THE GREAT DEBATE: Should wheelie suitcases be banned?

In a somewhat surprising move for a popular holiday destination, the mayor of Dubrovnik has implemented a new controversial policy, banning people from using wheeled suitcases in the old town.

The ban came about after local residents complained about noise pollution caused by the wheelie bags clattering on the cobbled streets, disrupting their peace. 

So from November onwards, holidaymakers will be required to leave all luggage at the ancient town’s walls. If any guest requires their bags to be transported to a hotel, they must pay extra for a courier to use an electric vehicle for delivery. 

So far, the policy has inevitably resulted in an outcry from tourists, sparking debate about the use of wheelie suitcases generally. 

While the old town residents are clearly in favour of the ban, others supporters have expressed approval of the move due to the hazard caused by these bags, which can trip people up and run over their feet. This has led some commenters to call for a similar ban in UK cities with high levels of tourism like London. 

Critics on the other hand believe this to be a particularly over-the-top measure from the Dubrovnik mayor. They argue that travelling is already exhausting, and wheelie bags make it significantly easier and more convenient to transport heavier luggage after a long journey. 

More serious concerns have also been raised about the impact of the ban on elderly and disabled travelers, who may struggle to manage the weight of their luggage  more than others. 

Critics have even predicted that this inconvenient regulation will result in a decrease in tourism to the region, particularly amongst travelers with physical ailments.
