Tesco shoppers furious after Christmas delivery slots sell out within minutes
5th December 2018

There was anger on Twitter after customers with a monthly "delivery saver" subscription were able to book prime slots for the days before December 25 a week in advance of other shoppers.

Shoppers said they stayed up until midnight on Monday and Tuesday to book Christmas delivery slots for December 23 and 24 respectively, which is when they became available to all customers for the first time.

But many complained that slots in their areas were already sold out as soon as they went live at one minute past midnight.

On Twitter, a Tesco spokesman explained that delivery saver customers were able to book slots for December 23 and Christmas Eve from November 26 and that the prime delivery spots were likely "booked up on that day".

When The Sun tried to book a one-hour delivery slot in a rural location today, the website stated that there are "no slots available" anytime between December 19 and 25.

Tesco has said that there are some home delivery slots still available in some parts of the country, as well as some "click and collect" slots, which can cost up to £2 but are sometimes free.

In London, the website has have one-hour delivery slots available up until Christmas Eve, with an inflated delivery charge of £7 or £8.

Tesco's delivery saver scheme is a monthly subscription starting from £3.99 per month which gives shoppers free deliveries and priority access to prime slots.

On Twitter, a spokesman said it "rewards" its delivery saver customers with priority booking of Christmas slots because the slots are "very popular".

They added that there has been a "huge demand" for the Christmas delivery slots this year.

Even though they had priority access, some delivery saver customers said they also missed out on Christmas slots because they didn't book them as soon as they became available on November 26.

On November 29 – before the slots were released to the general public – delivery saver customer Caren Freeman said she defected to Asda because she wasn't able to book a slot just before Christmas.

She wrote: "Thank you @asda I’ve managed to get a Christmas delivery slot for Christmas Eve.

"After years of paying for delivery saver from @Tesco with the earliest they can do is the 21st, which was booked as soon as they released their slots."

Others said they didn't receive an email from Tesco telling them that Christmas delivery slots had been released.
