Russell Westbrook makes just as many headlines for his style as he does playing for the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The basketball player, 30, stepped out in an eyebrow-raising outfit before his latest game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night. A pair of light blue cropped trousers with a matching button-up, camo-printed mini bag and $595 Buscemi sneakers might have been enough to make a statement, but it was Westbrook’s gloves — which dangled from a harness around his neck — that really made the look stand out.
“It’s like a runway before every game?? I thought this was basketball,” one person commented on a video posted by the NBA. Others compared Westbrook’s outfit to that of a coal miner, postal worker, train conductor and electrician. Most simply wondered why the star would need to keep his mittens so close at hand. “When you have to play the Lakers at 8 but need to take the lasagna out the oven at 9,” one commenter joked.
Fashion has always been Westbrook’s domain, and he doesn’t mind a little ribbing. “Other players are so worried about what I have on — they’re not worried about what’s about to happen on the court,” the guard, who famously does not use a stylist, said last year of his secret tactic.
However polarizing, it seems the gloves may have helped Westbrook warm up before the big game: The Thunder beat the Lakers 107 to 100.
