Our British royals are well known for looking the part but there’s another side to the monarchy that we rarely see.

The Queen and her growing family are always dressed to the nines and stay on their best behaviour to impress special guests.

With a stiff upper lip, dazzling jewellery and perfectly pressed suits, they really are in a league of their own.

But away from prying eyes the famous family have let down their guard and shown the world that they’re a bit more normal than we thought.

Here’s a sneak peek into the lesser-known lives of the royals…

Candid camera

In 2007, Kate Middleton was a hot ticket for paparazzi, who often captured the future princess en route to nightclubs with sister Pippa and a few close friends.

As she left London’s Mahiki nightclub, Kate once decided to snap back at the cameramen using her retro phone.

The royals are rarely ever spotted with a mobile phone but Kate has become a dab hand with a camera, sharing her professional photographs of Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis on their birthdays.

Big beard

Prince William gave a beard a go at 26, flaunting his new look on Christmas Day in 2008 at Sandringham.

It’s believed that he grew facial hair in an effort to hide his identity on a military exercise in Barbados with the Navy’s Special Boat Service.

Mission accomplished, the tash and beard were later scrapped when William began training as a pilot with the Royal Air Force.

According to an insider, the Queen doesn’t approve of facial hair. “She doesn’t mind royal men growing beards when they’re away in the armed forces or out in the wild like Harry was in the Antarctic, but she expects them to be clean-shaven when they get home,” they said.

Pop princess

Prince Harry was mixing with the stars long before meeting Suits star Meghan Markle.

Harry and Rihanna first met in 2016, when they were both tested for HIV/AIDS on World AIDS Day in Barbados.

The superstar didn’t get an invite to the royal wedding but Harry’s raved about her to his dad, Prince Charles, who shared a speech with the singer in 2019 and called her a “global style icon”.

Suits you, ma’am!

In 1979, the Queen was spotted in a pair of flowy beige trousers on safari in Zambia with Prince Phillip.

According to tradition, royal women usually wear skirts or dresses while on duty.

Her Majesty loves vibrant colours with matching hats and coats and hasn’t been seen in trousers for almost a decade.

But when the Queen decides to pop on some slacks, it’s usually during private time on holiday for sport or leisure.

Happy holiday

Prince Charles has fond memories of trips to Holkham beach with the Queen, Prince Phillip and Princess Anne.

In 1957, Charles (then eight) and the family spent a day on the Norfolk coast – a public beach now popular with tourists.

The children spent hours playing hide and seek in the sand dunes and were captured on video by the Queen, buried up to their necks with one of Her Majesty’s much-loved corgis.

Charles recalled, “Feeling you were never going to get out!”

Double denim

A love of horses runs deep in our royal family and Princess Anne proves no exception.

In 1985, she was spotted at Windsor Horse Show with four-year-old daughter Zara – a future Olympian and Team GB equestrian athlete who was awarded a silver medal by her mother in 2012.

Anne also passed down her love for denim, with both women pictured sporting the casual look in jeans and dungarees.
