Plenty of Fish user fleeced out of £200 for Liverpool FC tickets by bogus date

A woman fleeced out of £200 for non-existent football tickets by someone she met on a dating site admits she was "stupid" and is warning others to not make the same mistake.

Lauren Paton, 28, met the man named "Andy" on the popular Plenty of Fish website and they quickly got chatting before exchanging phone numbers and Instagram details.

The conversation turned to Liverpool Football Club and Andy said he had a spare £40 ticket to watch them play on Saturday at Anfield, against Arsenal, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Lauren, from Wavertree, offered to buy it for her dad and transferred the money to Andy’s bank account, along with £100 he said he needed.

He then said he had a second ticket available after claiming his aunt had just died from cancer and he couldn’t watch the game.

However, after arranging to meet at a city centre bar for a drink, he never arrived – nor did the tickets.

Lauren said: "I know what happened is my own fault, and I’ve been naive and stupid.

"I just don’t want it to happen to anyone else.

"I contacted the police and they told me that without his name and address, they can’t do anything.

"But I’ve got his social media details, his number and his bank details."

Lauren, a retail worker, believes this is not the first time Andy has conned someone and thinks he may be a serial scammer.

When she confronted him about wanting her money back and him being a no-show, she said he gave a series of excuses.

Lauren added: "I’ve told him I’m going to the local papers, and he’s been pleading with me to give him a little more time to pay me back.

"I posted a Facebook message, asking people if they thought he was genuine, and was told he wasn’t a nice person and had form for robbing girls before.

"If doing this story means making a show of me, then so be it.

"I’ve been texting him and telling him he’s not getting away with it.

"I was stupid enough to trust him. I don’t know what I was thinking.

"I told my mum and she went mad at me.

"I’ve since seen his Instagram account has 2,000 followers and a lot of them are girls. He’s just a sleazy horrible person."
