With 2019 just around the corner, it’s time to brainstorm New Year’s resolutions. Mayim Bialik has some ideas about how to make them last long-term.

The “Big Bang Theory” actress pointed out in a YouTube video Thursday that people often aim too high with their New Year’s resolutions and then quit when goals aren’t perfectly met.

“Slow your role, people,” she said. “Every day is another day. And while January first is oh so special, you needn’t think of it like it’s Armageddon… Change is gradual and you should aim for progress and not perfection.”

Case in point: instead of deciding you’re “going gluten-free tomorrow,” Bialik suggested, shift your focus to “avoiding gluten for the most part.”

“Don’t make resolutions that have to be forever,” she continued. “Because if you slip and fall, the slip and fall will be huge and it might scare you off from trying again.”

For the best results, Bialik pictures resolutions as “an extension of who I can be,” and sees self-improvement as an enjoyable process, not part of the problem.

“They’re so much fun. You get to imagine the best of you,” she said. “Make room in your resolutions for a little dose of humanness and you’ll get a lot farther without hating yourself.”

Bialik also shared her own resolutions for 2019: “Meditating more, napping more, saying ‘no’ to things that zap my energy and my brain and putting my phone away more when I’m with my kids. And eating less processed foods.

“And also not eating like it’s my 12th birthday every day,” she joked.
