The mother of Lamar Odom’s children said their relationship ended because he descended into drug use and partying while he grieved the tragic death of their infant son.
High school sweethearts Odom and Liza Morales welcomed their third child, Jayden, in 2005. But he died from SIDS in his crib in their New York home when he was 6 months old.
Morales, who’s now starring on VH1’s “Basketball Wives,” tells Page Six that the loss was also the death knell for their relationship.
“I realized I lost Lamar when our son Jayden passed away,” she told us. “We grieved so differently.”
Odom was playing for the Los Angeles Lakers at the time of the baby’s death. Morales had moved to the city with him when he’d been drafted by the LA Clippers, but decided to spend some time in her native New York after Jayden’s passing.
“I started hearing a lot of rumblings. People coming to me, knowing I am the mother of his kids, telling me, ‘I think you need to watch Lamar with the white stuff,’” she told us. “So it was definitely in my head but I couldn’t worry about that. Like I just wanted to focus on me and this is why I stayed in New York.”
She continued, “I was grieving. I was severely depressed for like two years, without knowing I was severely depressed. A lot of people don’t talk about that stuff. In my family and communities of color, we don’t talk about that stuff. So I finally got diagnosed after I went to a therapist.”
Odom, of course, famously went on to marry Khloé Kardashian in 2009 after the couple dated for only a month.
“It was hurtful at that time to learn of their marriage,” she told us. “He was getting married and he told me in a text message. I’ve known you since I was 15; I deserve better than a text message.”
Kardashian and Odom’s marriage ended in 2016 after Odom overdosed in a Nevada brothel in 2015 and it was revealed that he’d had a string of relationships with other women.
This past November, he broke off an engagement to personal trainer Sabrina Parr.
In his 2019 memoir, Odom said he was both a drug addict and a sex addict.
Morales says she has no interest in getting back together with Odom.
“That boat sank a long time ago,” she said, “One person grew up, the other person didn’t.”
Morales will appear on the ninth season of “Basketball Wives.”
