Jennifer Lopez, Kris Jenner and more sit in Balmain’s virtual front row

Is this the new normal?

On Thursday, designer Olivier Rousteing staged his spring 2021 Balmain runway show at the Jardin des Plantes during Paris Fashion Week, unveiling his latest creations in front of both a virtual front row and a crowd.

VIPs like Anna Wintour, Kris Jenner, Cara Delevingne, Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Megan Thee Stallion, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer appeared on individual monitors positioned in the front row seats, politely looking on and clapping — though it’s unclear whether the videos were pre-recorded or livestreamed.

It seems Rousteing’s designs may have alluded to the new virtual reality; according to WWD, the designer hinted that his oversized shoulder pads would be particularly eye-catching in a Zoom meeting.

Besides the virtual attendees, there were various influencers and European celebrities who attended in person, as fashion weeks in London, Milan and Paris attempted to create some sense of normalcy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
