James Argent’s weight loss: TOWIE star’s body transformation over the years as he shows off slimmed-down figure
26th May 2020

James Argent, 32, has made no secret of his struggle with his weight in the past. Over the years, the reality star's weight has altered, with James losing four stone in 2015, before putting it back on, and losing it again in 2017.

The The Only Way Is Essex star has also experimented with diets and fitness boot camps since joining the show in 2010, both on-screen and behind the scenes.

And during an interview on This Morning, he was urged to lose 10 stone in weight by Dr Ranj in order to get back down to a healthy BMI.

In 2019, James admitted he was the "biggest" he'd ever been and said he was "desperate" to get back on track. Now, Arg is on a mission to shed the pounds and, last year, even reportedly enlisted the help of boxer Tyson Fury, 31.

Recently, Arg showed off his impressive weight loss as he went for a run in Essex, weeks after reportedly returning from a rehab in Thailand.

Here's a look at the star's weight loss timeline…

In 2015, the reality favourite lost four stone after checking into rehab following a short suspension from TOWIE.

Speaking to Now! magazine about his transformation at the time, he explained: "I went to rehab for my low self-esteem issues and being in recovery meant I had to change my whole lifestyle."

"It wasn't just learning about my problems – it was learning to love myself. Now I know if you eat rubbish, you feel like rubbish. It's a vicious circle and it brings you down."

After sharing before-and-after pictures on social media, Mark Wright's best pal admitted: "OMG at the time I just didn’t realise how big I actually was! This gives me the motivation to keep going!”

Following his weight loss, he managed to maintain his physique for a short period of time with the help of a strict diet, working out five times a week and cutting out booze.

"Gutted" about weight gain

In 2016, Arg revealed he was "gutted" after gaining weight again.

Sharing a photo in the gym, he revealed: "Training camp starts today! Gutted at how unfit I am but I'll get there & maintain it this time!"

And during a 10-week stint at No1 Boot Camp's weight loss retreats in Norfolk and Ibiza towards the end of the year, his weight went from 19st 1lb to 16st, as well as losing eight inches from his waist.

The website details: "Our answer is that, all our UK Boot Camps are essentially about training hard, eating well and having fun with new people.

"But they are also about learning new fitness and nutrition habits that will transform your life – Overcome physical or mental challenges and push yourself way beyond your limitations!"

Visits to rehab and a new healthy lifestyle

James checked himself into a rehab facility in Thailand in 2017, and lost a further stone in weight.

Talking to new! magazine at the time, his friend Jack Tweed revealed: "He said he's been doing loads of stuff like Muay Thai boxing, jungle trekking, abseiling down waterfalls and zip lining.

"He's been eating really healthy food and he's lost over a stone. Arg is in a really good place at the moment and I hope he keeps it up, for his sake and his family's sake."

In 2018, James checked himself back into rehab, and a spokesperson for the ITVBe show confirmed at the time: "James is taking a break from TOWIE to give himself the space and time to concentrate on his well-being.

"We remain in contact and very much support the positive steps he is taking."

Arg's weight loss mission

In 2019, the TOWIE favourite embarked on a new health and fitness regime after revealing it's the "biggest" he's ever been.

Arg opened up on his desire to lose weight, telling The Sun: “In regards to my body – I need to work on that. I need to get back in the gym and boxing again.

“I’m desperate to get back on track. I need to work on my fitness that is my number one New Year’s resolution – but I find it so difficult. I struggle to get into a routine and structure with my job I’m here, there and everywhere."

During an interview on This Morning, he was urged to lose 10 stone, with Dr Ranj saying: "Arg, everything I’m about to say I say out of love but it’s tough love. You know you’re significantly over weight, we measured you earlier and we weighed you and your BMI is 44 which means you’re significantly obese and you’re at risk long term of things like heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

"So looking at your measurements you actually long term need to lose 10 stone to get your BMI back towards that normal range and you need to lose 17 inches around your waist.

He added: "Now, if you’re going to be realistic about this and let’s say if you aim for long term, you’re going to lose something like 2lbs a week which would be a sensible amount to start losing and you need to cut your daily calorie intake, so you need to be mindful of your calories, to around 2500 calories a day."

Reacting to the information at the time, Gemma Collins' boyfriend appeared determined to lose weight. He said: "I’ve done it before so I can do it again.

"What I’ve taken from the doctor is that it needs to be a long term goal and it needs to be realistic. Obviously it’s quite scary the thought that, 10 stone is a hell of a lot of weight and it seems like a marathon and it’s not going to be a quick fix."

After getting advice from Dr Ranj about how to lose weight, Arg embarked on his biggest fitness challenge yet by training to swim the English Channel.

Announcing the news on his Instagram, Arg shared a video of himself swimming in a pool and wrote: “I’m very proud to finally reveal I will be SWIMMING THE CHANNEL in aid of @su2cuk.”

He revealed his motivations behind the challenge were his grandad, who died of prostate cancer when Arg was a teenager and added the challenge was “also a great chance for me to kickstart my healthy lifestyle & weight loss journey!”

Sharing an update with fans, with three weeks to go until taking on the challenge, Arg revealed he was training twice and day and “loosing weight”.

Unfortunately Arg and the rest of the Sink Or Swim team were left devastated when they were forced to give up on the attempt just four miles away from reaching the shores of France.

James' 2020 weight loss journey

Arg reportedly checked himself into a £20,000 a month retreat in Thailand in January after being rushed to hospital the month before.

A source close to Gemma Collins’ on-off boyfriend told The Sun Online: “Arg has jetted off to Thailand to start the New Year at a specialist facility.

“He has realised he needs help with his recent addiction issues and with his weight loss battle, so has turned to professionals.”

After returning to the UK, Arg has been spotted jogging in Essex, boasting a significant weight loss.

The star showed his support for girlfriend Gemma Collins on his run as he wore a jumper from her latest clothing collection with In The Style, in which memes of the star are printed on the front.

The star is clearly keeping fit during the coronavirus lockdown, as he has also been snapped out for a cycle, while wearing a protective mask.

As well, Arg jumped on a Zoom call with Ferne McCann's adorable daughter Sunday, and shared a sweet screen grab of the pair beaming at each other, on his Instagram.

Arg put his incredible weight loss on display as he was shirtless in the snap, showing just how much he has transformed his figure.

More recently, the star has revealed that he is a 'cocaine addict' in a searingly honest interview.

The Only Way is Essex star has admitted to his problems with addiction in the past and has now explained how he hit 'rock bottom' when he suffered two overdoses.

Speaking in a video interview with the Sun Online, Arg, 32, recalled how the emergency services had to knock down the door after he overdosed back in October 2019, which he had initially claimed was a 'misunderstanding'.

The singer recalled how he had locked himself in his home and "took drugs for three days straight on [his] own in the pitch black".

“I was at rock bottom. My heart was beating out of my chest, my nose was bleeding, I was shaking and my breathing was terrible."

However, since kicking his cocaine habit, James has revealed plans to lose a further three stone.

Arg explained that his weight had crept up as a result of "vicious cycles" of binge eating and cocaine. He told The Sun: "I've actually lost five stone.

"I was 23 and a half stone before rehab and I'd like to get another three stone off. I feel so much better in myself.”
