England is currently entering the first stages of its second national lockdown as coronavirus cases rose back to dangerous levels in the last few months. The lockdown came into effect on Thursday, November 5, at 12.01 am and is expected to end on December 2. But Cabinet Minister Michael Gove has already sent a stark warning that the shutdown could be in place longer than the proposed end date if the situation doesn’t improve.

As a result of the new lockdown, pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops have all had to close their doors.

And just like the initial lockdown in March, workers have been told to work from home where possible while the public has been urged to remain indoors and minimise contact with others.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said police will continue the approach of “policing by consent” to try and get the public to comply with the new lockdown measures.

The Prime Minister’s announcement came on the same day the UK surpassed one million lab-confirmed cases of the virus.

Boris Johnson was forced to act after Tier 3 restrictions across the majority of England failed to curb the spread of the virus.

Mr Johnson said there was “no alternative” to the latest nationwide lockdown.

Chief scientific advisors Professor Christ Whitty and Sir Patrick Vallance produced graphs suggesting deaths could exceed the first peak and the NHS could be overwhelmed in the coming winter months.

However, official projections have since been revised to no longer suggest deaths could soon overtake those at the peak of the first wave.

Documents released by the Government show the figures were far too high and have been “amended after an error was found”.

Is Holland and Barrett open during the second lockdown?

Holland and Barrett is expected to remain open during the second lockdown, given it was open during the last one.

Alternative health shops have been classed as essential retailers under the new lockdown rules.

Holland and Barrett customers should be welcome to browse shelves for healthy food, supplements and vitamins to boost wellbeing.

The alternative chain has more than 750 UK stores and was classed as essential in the first lockdown due to its selling of products that cater for people with special dietary needs.

Another reason Holland and Barrett was allowed to stay open is that it’s classed as a food retailer.

However, staff at the alternative health food were unhappy about the stores remaining open during the last lockdown.

Some set up a petition pleading with management to close the stores over safety concerns.

Workers brought forward two complaints.

They argued that what the chain sells is not essential in the same way supermarkets and pharmacies are.

They also warned that most stores are too small to be safe, with no adequate room for social distancing measures to be properly implemented.

One staff member said that in many shops: “It is almost practically impossible to maintain social distancing, as the miles are very short width and when we have to deal with customer queries, they do not respect the boundaries.”
