Inside GMB host Gordon Smart’s friendship with Line of Duty’s Martin Compston
30th December 2022

Gordon Smart made his Good Morning Britain debut this week, with the journalist fronting the hit ITV morning show alongside Charlotte Hawkins.

Gordon, 42, is best known for being a journalist and radio host, with the dad-of-two presenting shows on TalkSPORT and Radio X over the years.

He's also the co-host of the Restless Natives podcast along with close pal and Line of Duty actor Martin Compston, 38. The podcast sees the duo recount their different adventures and also plan new ones.

Martin and Gordon launched the podcast in August 2022 on Global Player, after wanting to start one for many years.

Speaking to Radio X's Johnny Vaughan earlier this year, Martin said: "It's kind of something that's been bubbling away for a few years. There's been a lot of drunken talk about it over the years."

Martin's work at the Ardgowan Hospice in his hometown of Greenock inspired the idea. He's a patron of the hospice and has put on a huge show featuring artists such as Example and The View, and he and Gordon hope to put on a festival one day.

The name of the podcast was inspired by the 1985 cult Scottish film Restless Natives which focuses on The Clown and The Wolfman taking on the task of holding up tourist buses in the Highlands.

Martin and Gordon most recently headed to Belfast to film parts for their podcast, and were joined by special guest, comedian Shane Todd.

Gordon and Martin are so close that the journalist's GMB co-host Charlotte, 47, mistakenly called him Martin during his first time on the ITV show.

Dad-of-two Gordon made his debut on GMB on 29 December as he and Charlotte covered for usual presenters Kate Garraway, 55, Susanna Reid, 52, and Ben Shephard, 48, who have taken time off for the festive period.

Gordon announced he would be fronting the show on his Instagram page, where he shared a photo of himself behind the iconic desk in ITV studios.

He announced the exciting news that he would be presenting the show on both 29 and 30 December.

"Looking forward to making my debut hosting @gmb this Thursday and Friday with @charlottehawkins1 @itv," the 42 year old penned.

He added: "Told my dad about the new gig and he said 'better get a spray tan, son.' Good. See you bright and early at 6am, 29th and 30th December. Good Morning Britain!"
