I lost my dad to Huntington's disease and I am scared I may get it too
28th November 2020

DEAR DEIDRE: I’M unsure whether to have the test to see if I’ve inherited the gene that causes Huntington’s disease.

My father recently lost his life at just 60 because of it.

It was terrible to watch him go through it.

We were with him as he was dying. When I think of him lying there, the tears just flow.

Now we have the choice to see whether we have the same gene. My older brother has just had a positive genetic test.

I’m a woman of 35 with a young child and know I should have the test too, but I’m terrified.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m so sorry you lost your dad to such a cruel disease.

The issue of whether to go for genetic testing isn’t black and white.

Your brother now has to live with the knowledge that he is likely to develop the condition.

But maybe he feels he can plan the next few years with more insight.

You can find support to make the right decision through the Genetic Alliance (geneticalliance.org.uk, 0300 124 0441).
