DEAR DEIDRE: HOW do I stop worrying about what people think of me?
I am a woman of 28 and really want to be more self-confident.
But thinking what other people might be saying about me behind my back consumes me.
I imagine they are plotting against me because they don’t like me.
And if I hear people laugh, I assume they are laughing about me for some reason.
It is so horrible to feel plagued like this.
How do I become more confident?

DEIDRE SAYS: Can you trace back to when these fears started? Were you bullied at school?
Understanding the origin could help you.
Cognitive behavioural therapy can also help stop the irrational fears, so ask your GP for a referral.
Anxiety underlies this too and you can find understanding support through Anxiety UK (anxietyuk.org.uk, 03444 775774).
