Heretic Nabs World Rights to Cannes Critics’ Week Selection ‘Feathers’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Heretic, the Athens-based boutique production company and sales agent, has acquired world sales rights for “Feathers,” the feature-length debut of Egyptian writer-director Omar El Zohairy, which will have its premiere in Cannes Critics’ Week.

“Feathers” explores a family’s transformation when a magic trick goes awry at a birthday party, and the magician turns the father into a chicken. The film was produced by Juliette Lepoutre from Still Moving (France), in co-production with Mohamed Hefzy from Film Clinic (Egypt), Shahinaz Al Akkad from Lagoonie Film (Egypt), Derk-Jan Warrink and Koji Nelissen from Kepler Film (The Netherlands), Giorgos Karnavas and Konstantinos Kontovrakis from Heretic (Greece), and Verona Meier.

“‘Feathers’ tells a story about a family that is topical and essential. Turning the father into a chicken and adding a great deal of humor into it, the film lets you absorb a narrative that is serious yet absurd and unconventional,” said Heretic’s head of sales and acquisitions, Ioanna Stais. “This is a film that we know for a few years now, since our production team worked on it as co-producers, and we are confident that we are the right people to handle its international sales. We hope audiences around the world find it as striking as we did.”

Juliette Lepoutre, producer at Still Moving, added: “It took six years to develop ‘Feathers,’ from the initial idea to producing the film, and the Heretic production team have been real partners in this adventure. It was an obvious choice to continue working with a team with such passion and strong will to represent the film to the international markets.”

Founded by Giorgos Karnavas and Konstantinos Kontovrakis in 2013, Heretic started as a production house and quickly expanded by establishing a first-of-its-kind world sales department for Southeastern Europe. The company’s sales arm, formerly known as Heretic Outreach, will now operate under the Heretic banner.

El Zohairy has worked as an A.D. alongside acclaimed Egyptian directors such as Yousry Nasrallah. His short film “The Aftermath of the Inauguration of the Public Toilet at Kilometer 365” was the first Egyptian film to be selected for Cannes’ Cinefondation.
