Couple turn HGV lorry into off-grid home with double bedroom and solar panels
7th October 2021

A young DIY-savvy couple who are expecting their first baby have revealed how they built their own stunning home on wheels.

Marcus Williams and partner Helen Ambler say their "Lorry Lodge" is the UK's first HGV lorry trailer fully converted into a home.

While the trailer originally cost them £5,000, they also spent 18 months and an extra £50,000 turning it into a spacious living space.

It features a double bedroom with built-in wardrobes, a bathroom, a compostable toilet and a traditional "cottage-style" kitchen.

The luxury cabin also comes with a large folding dining table, French windows, a log burner and solar panels.

Engineer Marcus and Helen, from West Yorkshire, have lived in the Lodge but are planning to raffle it off to fund a bigger project.

Marcus, 26, said: "We had originally planned to convert a van and go travelling but changed our plan.

"The idea of a lorry appealed to us because of the space it would provide.

"It was quite a long process converting it but we are really pleased with the finished result.

"It's a stunning off-grid home which can be towed anywhere."

The couple, who are expecting a baby, tested their DIY skills by renovating an old caravan before embarking on this job.

Now they plan to sell up to 4,000 £20 raffle tickets to help raise funds for a bigger, yet unspecified project.

Marcus added: "It's a great opportunity to own your own off-grid home.

"Once it's raffled we plan to take some time out to plan our next project."

In other property news, an adorable cottage just went on the market for £35,000, but it has one big downside.

The little house in Snowdonia, Wales, is located in the tiny hamlet of Pant Glas, on the road from Porthmadog to Caernarfon.

This means it's well-placed to visit either of these attractive coastal towns and also has marvellous views.

However, if you like a home with lots of space, then this one may not be for you.

That's because this cottage is so tiny it doesn't even have a toilet inside.
