The Simone Rocha x H&M Collection Features the Designer’s Best Pieces for Thousands Less
11th March 2021

I've had a pair of $130 pearl-beaded socks from Simone Rocha in my cart at Nordstrom for at least three months now. Rocha is one of my favorite designers, and the beaded socks feel like an easy way to make any outfit as whimsical and magical as her clothing designs. But I have not been able to convince myself to buy socks that cost over $100.

But now, H&M's hotly anticipated collection with the high-end fashion designer is live, and prices start at $8. There are red and black socks with bows on them for just $35, but more importantly, there are actual dresses, tops, and skirts for under $100. If you didn't already know, Simone Rocha dresses cost far more than its socks — not hundreds, but thousands more. Yet nothing in the Simone Rocha x H&M collection is more expensive than $299.

The collection feels like a dream to me. I slept outside of an H&M in downtown Brooklyn years ago, before I worked in fashion, just to get my hands on a Kenzo x H&M jacket that I still swear was worth the terrible night's sleep. These designer collaborations sell out instantly and are often the only chance many fashion fans have to score a piece by one of their favorite designers. But what's particularly special about the Simone Rocha x H&M collection is that it isn't a new collection created for the fashion giant, but a revival of Rocha's signature pieces and the best-sellers she's created in the last decade, like the sequin bralette from her Louise Bourgeois-inspired 2020 collection.

There are tulle tops for under $75; a Simone Rocha sculpted tulle top normally goes for $475. The ever-popular Simone Rocha beaded hair clip that always goes for $125 is now available in pairs for just $35. There's more than one midi tutu dress for under $200, a far cry from the $830 style currently at Nordstrom. And while the trench coats are the priciest items at $299 each, that's nearly $1,200 less than the Simone Rocha duster coat out right now. Why is it all so affordable? H&M's capabilities allow Rocha the opportunity to produce incredible pieces without having to sacrifice design.

Rocha's signature romantic details are all over every single item. There are bows, pearls, and tulle everywhere you look. But my favorite thing might just be what you can't see — it's what you have to imagine. Simone Rocha's designs are often compared to illustrations you'd see at an art museum or on the pages of an original fairytale. The promotional videos feature a dinner party in a remote yard, a tea party in a garden, and a game of hide-and-seek among pink eyelet dresses drying on a clothing line. The collaboration even brought in Chinese-British artist Faye Wei Wei to create an augmented reality featuring celebrities like Kaia Gerber and Rowan Blanchard twirling around on paintings set to classical music.

The collection is only available online, which means Simone Rocha fangirls like myself won't have to sleep outside of a store. And you might have to wear the items to a virtual happy hour or two before getting to really wear them out and show them off for the compliments they desperately deserve. But Simone Rocha's pieces were made for dreaming, so I'm dreaming about what it will be like to wear them when I reach the light at the end of the tunnel that is the pandemic. If there's a moment that calls for a beaded tulle dress I can actually afford, it's that.
