Felines have a knack for making us giggle – from sliding your stuff off the table for no reason to making landings you didn't think were possible.

And being able to constantly survive falls from great heights has led to many saying cats have nine lives, but it turns out that's not where the saying started at all.

Despite being able to survive tricky situations due to their flexibility and speed, they are unfortunately not invincible.

The myth of a cat having nine lives actually differs in countries, reports the Daily Star.

But the saying originally comes from an English proverb.

It reads: "A cat has nine lives. For three he plays, for three he strays, and for the last three he stays."

The proverb was written to describe a cat's life cycle – from a playful kitten to adult cat, and then a calmer senior cat.

However, it seems people began to take the saying quite literally – assuming a cat actually had nine lives.

The sun god was believed to have given birth to eight other gods, and some believe that is where the saying comes from as nine gods, plus the sun god equals nine lives.
