Tokyo-born, New York-based Kozaburo Akasaka looked to Buddhism for his fall collection, as well as for his digital presentation. The stunningly shot video was filmed at Mt. Koya, the misty mountaintop temple settlement south of Osaka that was first settled in the year 819.

The look: Akasaka created what he called “monk wear,” a series of cool yet practical separates that gave a contemporary edge to traditional Japanese Buddhist garb.

Standout pieces: Padded jackets and coordinating pin-tuck pants were a cross between mountain wear and commuter-friendly suiting. Pullovers in black or deep indigo had practical details such as snaps at the sides, roomy pockets, and off-center neck openings that made them look equally suited for a day of gardening or shopping.

Takeaway: Individual styles, as well as the compact, perfectly cohesive collection as a whole, were a study in minimalism, proving that a few well-designed, high-quality pieces is all that is necessary to create a complete modern wardrobe.
