I shopped at my local supermarket – the singing ducks and avocados are 'trippy', but there's a heartbreaking reason
9th April 2022

SHOPPERS at a supermarket kitted out with singing ducks and avocados may be forgiven if they think they’ve taken some mind-altering drug – but there’s a reason behind it all.

The Stew Leonard store in the Paramus Park mall, New Jersey, features an array of novelty attractions giving it a theme park feel.

Along with animatronic cows that moo and avocados that sing, there is Stewie the Water Safety Duck.

The animatronic’s water safety song is set to the music of “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.

Stew Leonard Jr. and his wife, Kim Leonard, established the Stew Leonard III Water Safety Foundation in memory of their son, who was 21 months old when he lost his life in a drowning accident in 1989.

Over the produce section can be found the green trio of Avocado Girls.

“We’re avocados, we’re avocados,” they sing to the melody from La Cucaracha.

They shake maracas and play guitar and bat their eyelids.

The jingle goes:

“We’re avocados, we’re avocados/avocado’s good for you.

“It’s fresh and yummy, will fill your tummy/and put you in a happy mood.

“We’re avocados, we’re avocados/we enjoyed singing to you.

“We hope you stop in, next time you’re shoppin’/at Stew Leonard’s farm fresh foods.”

The meat section features not only the model mooing cow, but also one hung upside down from the ceiling.

An employee can be found walking around in a cow costume.

At the register, a parade of cows are suspended from the ceiling.

Little fans are positioned on either side of them like propellers,

According to the company history, the first version of the business, Norwalk’s Clover Dairy Farms, had milk trucks outfitted with plastic cows that would moo for children.

Stew Leonard’s Farm Fresh Five are animatronic drink cartons who wear belted jeans and play instruments. Low Fat, Choco, Rich, Skim and the non-dairy outlier, OJ.

The quintet sing and play the melody to “Old MacDonald Had a Farm" above the refrigerated dairy section.

Another strange feature is the animatronic of an accordion-playing man in a Boar’s Head hot air balloon.

Also dotted around the store is an Incredible Hulk on an automated trapeze, a parrot over by the breadcrumbs

Over the freezer section waits a rooster.

When someone presses the button, out he pops and gives a shrill cry.

Then just as you’re making your way out there’s a chicken perched above a wishing well.

If a coin hits the target the animatronic moves about and the chicken seems to have an evil-eye stare.
