Twitter has erupted into a fierce debate after one lad scared a 1-9 scale from barely heated bread to burnt toast, asking: "What is the correct way?"
The majority of people went for a solid 6 – a slice which looks browned without even bordering on burnt – with one lass joking: "I will go to war about this."
There were also lots of 5s and 7s in the mix – as well as a couple of 3s.
But some strange creatures opted for a 9, sparking others to joke: "I've alerted the authorities".
While one woman admitted: "I make you 1 cause cba waiting by the toaster. Wish I was joking".
Can burnt toast give you cancer?
Two years ago, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned we should be "going for gold" with starchy foods like potatoes and bread, to avoid a "potential cancer risk".
This is because a chemical called acrylamide is formed when they're cooked to a high temperature.
Rats exposed to high levels of the chemical have been seen to develop cancer, but it's still unclear if the link exists in humans.
Acrylamide is currently defined by the World Health Organization as "probably carcinogenic to humans" – but nothing's known for sure.
To be on the safe side, your exposure to acrylamide should ideally be limited.
One lad said: "If you say anything other than 5-6 you're an animal".
While another bloke suggested this serious issue: "could be a Dating Site Test" – so people can check their compatibility.
Some got seriously technical, with one woman saying she'd go for a 3 for chicken sarnies, 4 or 5 for buttered toast and 6 for a grilled cheese.
While Man U footballer Marcos Rojo's preference was also thrown into the mix – he's definitely a 9, maybe even a 10.
For what it's worth, we're in the 5-6 camp.
