This Morning chef praised as ‘the only person’ to pay true tribute to Phillip Schofield

This Morning chef Clodagh McKenna has been praised for her moving tribute to former colleague Phillip Schofield after the 61 year old announced his departure from the show over the weekend.

Phillip announced on Saturday, 20 May, that he was leaving the show “with immediate effect” after a difficult few days on air amid reports he was feuding with co-star Holly Willoughby.

He also thanked people for their support – with Clodagh being one of his few colleagues to give him what This Morning fans have labelled as a “proper send off”.

Sharing a snap of them on the programme together, Clodagh penned to Instagram: “21 years of brightening up our mornings…. And I’ve been so lucky to be part of 3 of them. I’ll miss the morning hug, the twinkle in your eye that makes me giggle and your empathy.”

She concluded the post: “You will be missed @schofe”.

Clodagh’s followers have since applauded her for her kind words. One person wrote: “First person I’ve heard in support for Phil. I’ve grown up with him on the tv, always brightened up coming home from school watching him in the broom cupboard, then looking forward to Saturday mornings with ‘Going live’ I’ve enjoyed his whole career, he really will be missed”.

Another added: “Clodagh well done. You are the only person that I have seen to come out and acknowledge Phil’s 21 years and that you will miss him.The vitriol has been vile.”

“Well done Clodagh ! regardless of whats gone on Holly who was supposed to be his friend appears to have ditched him and thrown him to the Wolves,” a third continued.

“Good to see a colleague giving him support,” said someone else.

“Feel he should have been given a proper send-off. Doesn’t seem right just to have left with no best wishes whatever has went on behind the scenes”.

Others said that Phillip seems to have been “robbed of a proper goodbye”.

Their comments come after Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary paid tribute to their co-star on Monday morning’s show but many felt it was “insincere”.

Alison began: "Now, we can't start today's show without paying tribute to the man who has spent the last two decades sitting on this sofa – Phillip Schofield."

Dermot said: "Everyone on and off the screen at ITV and This Morning want to say a huge thank you to Phil for what he's done to make this show a success over the last 21 years."

Alison added: "Quite simply, we all know he's one of the best live television broadcasters this country has ever had and we, and all the team, wish him all the best for the future."

One viewer wrote online afterwards: “Wot a load of cr*p….that beginning was soooo false & cringe #ThisMorning", as another said: "#thismorning ok turned on just to see the most insincere tribute and send off ever and l am now switching permanently to another daytime programme. Can't watch that motley crew now. Its had its day".

Elsewhere others said that Alison and Dermot looked visibly upset as they started the show on a sombre note.
