Amanda Abbington admits she’s ‘scared’ ahead of Strictly debut

Amanda Abbington, who is best known for Josie Mardle in Mr Selfridge and Mary Morstan in Sherlock, will compete in this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The BBC star was announced as the first contestant to join the line-up on Friday.

Amanda, who was famously married to fellow Sherlock star Martin Freeman between 2000 and 2016, has opened up about feeling “scared” ahead of her debut on the Strictly dance floor.

She posted a video message to her 92,600 followers on Instagram yesterday detailing how she was feeling ahead of the 2023 series.

Amanda began by introducing fans to her adorable dog Darcey, before expressing her gratitude for their overwhelming support.

The star said: “I just wanted to come on and say thank you so far to everyone who’s been so lovely and kind and supportive and excited about my announcement that I’m going on Strictly.

“Thank you so much – you’ve all been so lovely,” she continued.

“It’s a bit scary, because it’s going to be me and I’m not being a character,” the actress explained.

“I’m playing myself, so that’s always a bit scary, but everybody’s just been so lovely.

“By in large I’ve just been overwhelmed by the response of people who have just been so generous and kind and I really, really appreciated it.

“I really do, because I’m dead scared and apprehensive and nervous and excited,” she admitted.

“And all those things can cause a bit of anxiety so thank you so much and I’m thrilled that I get the chance to do it. I’ve always wanted to do it.

“So we’re really happy about it, aren’t we?” she asked, turning to face Darcey who gave her a blank look.

“No, you don’t care? Okay,” she added, giving the pup a kiss before turning back to the camera to say, “Darcey doesn’t care. She doesn’t care about anything apart from bones.”

She added: “But thank you so much. Come along for the ride, it’s going to be fun! I’m really excited and I promise we’ll have a good time and some laughs.

As she signed off, Amanda added: “I hope I don’t fall over!”

Amanda, who has been married to retired escapologist and daredevil Jonathan Goodwin since 2021, has also appeared in critically acclaimed shows like Inside No. 9 and I Hate Suzie, and recenlty appeared in 2022 film The Lost King.

Other celebs that have been announced to be joining Amanda on the Strictly dancer floor include Angela Rippon, Layton Williams and Krishnan Guru-Murthy.
