Primary Wave Music Publishing announced that it has acquired the entire music catalog of the Sly & the Family Stone.
The company said the deal includes all music assets of Even St. Productions, which covers music publishing and master royalty streams of all songs written by Sylvester Stewart (Sly Stone). This also includes the hits “Everyday People,” Thank You,” “Dance To The Music,” and “Family Affair.”
However, the Estate of Michael Jackson has disputed Primary Wave’s announcement regarding its Sly Stone copyrights.
The company issued a statement, “The Sly & The Family Stone’s classic song copyrights are owned by Mijac Music, which is part of the Estate of Michael Jackson, and is administered by Sony/ATV Music Publishing, which handles all licensing requests.”
The estate of Michael Jackson has clarified that Primary Wave has acquired a passive writer royalty income stream and not any ownership in the songs in the Sly and the Family Stone catalog.
