Nicki Minaj paid tribute to late rapper Juice WRLD while speaking after accepting the Game-Changer Award at Billboard‘s 2019 Women in Music event on Thursday.
Normani presented Minaj the award for her boundary-breaking achievements in music.
Minaj recalled an occasion of walking to the stage with Juice WRLD during her The Nicki Wrld Tour earlier this year.
“I recently had the pleasure of working and touring with Juice WRLD. I had a great conversation with him and while we walked to the stage, he held my hand and told me to stay calm and to pray. He said that he had been trying to do just that,” an emotionally moved Minaj said.
She added, “I was so shocked to hear him of all people tell me that, but right there in that moment with him telling me that, I actually did feel calm and I felt like, ‘Hmm… what am I actually worried about?’ I felt like he was a kindred spirit.”
Juice WRLD died after suffering a seizure at Chicago’s Midway airport on December 8.
The hip-hop artist, 21, suffered a seizure in the terminal after he landed at Chicago on a private jet from Los Angeles accompanied by his friends.
