Kate once gave William ultimatum and ‘declined’ invitation to royal Christmas

The Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton, apparently rejected Prince William's invitation to a royal Christmas back in 2006, when they were just dating.

Now parents to three young children in Charlotte, George and Louis, and 11 years married, Kate, 40, and William, 40, are regulars at the big festive bash down in Sandringham, yet palace expert and author Tina Brown has suggested it was once very different.

"Before graduation [from The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst], William had issued his girlfriend the coveted invitation to join him at the Queen’s annual Christmas house party at Sandringham," she wrote in her book The Palace Papers.

"Kate maintained her resolve that she would not go to such a significant Royal Family gathering unless she had a ring on her finger. She declined. William met her decision with silence."

Leaving her partner the Duke of Cambridge to attend in a solo capacity, Kate then "retreated to Scotland to stay with her parents, who had rented a house in Perthshire for the holidays", according to Brown.

Interestingly, these claims were reinforced in Robert Lacey's biography Battle of Brothers, who suggested that the future royal would "go to Sandringham on Christmas Day only when she was engaged and had a ring to prove it".

The Royal Family delighted crowds as they attended their annual Christmas Day service at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham this year, with Prince Louis making a typically adorable debut at the annual get-together.

This Christmas was the family's first without Queen Elizabeth, who passed away aged 96 in September.

Despite it being an undeniably difficult day for the likes of King Charles and Prince William, they were all smiles as they arrived at Church.

The Royals later headed to the Sandringham estate, where the family’s festivities continued.

Located in Norfolk, England, just over 100 miles north of London, the 20,000 acres of land was passed on to Queen Elizabeth II after George VI passed away in the house in 1952.
