Tweets are the 21st century’s version of village proclamations, and Cara Delevingne seemingly made use of that medium last night when she sent out a cryptic tweet with the following message: “Me and Ashley broke up.”
The message sent a shockwave through social media platforms where fans have long rallied for the relationship between the Carnival Row actress and girlfriend Ashley Benson. Soon, however, the tweet was deleted, with no follow-up explanation or message from Delevingne or Benson. Consequently, many are speculating that the blunt proclamation was nothing more than the ill-intended prank of a hacker.
Benson and Delevingne have been together for more than a year.
Chatting with Marie Claire for the magazine’s September cover story, Delevingne spoke candidly about their romance. “We weren’t looking for it,” Delevingne said of her girlfriend. (The couple met as costars on the set of the 2018 film Her Smell.) “It was really just very authentic and natural.”
In June, while accepting the Hero Award from nonprofit organization The Trevor Project, Delevingne nodded to her girlfriend during her acceptance speech, saying, “I also have another very special woman in this room to thank, and you know who you are. She’s one of the people who helped me love myself when I needed it most, and I really needed it. She showed me what real love is and how to accept it, which is a lot harder than I thought.”
