Beyoncé & Jay-Z Memorialize His Grandmother In Brooklyn
29th December 2018

Power couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé have dedicated a Brooklyn park bench to the rapper’s 93-year-old grandmother, Hattie White.

On Christmas eve, the Carter family, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, their three kids and Grandma White, visited Brooklyn’s Prospect Park and gifted the matriarch a park bench with her name on it.

According to the JAY-Z Instagram fan account, aintnojigga, the inscription reads: “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago. With love and admiration to our root, Hattie White.”

The post included a picture of White looking at the bench with her hand over her heart as the whole family looked on.

It was White who inspired the title for Beyoncé’s iconic 2016 album Lemonade. In the final moments of the song “Freedom,” White’s voice is heard saying: “I had my ups and downs, but I always find the inner strength to pull myself up. I was served lemons, but I made lemonade.”
