Alec Baldwin’s lawyer says decision to prosecute star is ‘terrible miscarriage of justice’
19th January 2023

Alec Baldwin’s lawyer has labelled the charges he’s facing as a “terrible miscarriage of justice”.

Earlier today, Thursday 19 January, it was announced by the New Mexico Attorney’s office that the 64 year old is to be charged with involuntary manslaughter after Halyna Hutchins died on the set of Rust in October 2021.

The film’s armourer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is also being charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter over Halyna’s passing on the film’s Santa Fe County set.

District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwie said of the charges: “After a thorough review of the evidence and the laws of the state of New Mexico, I have determined that there is sufficient evidence to file criminal charges against Alec Baldwin and other members of the Rust film crew."

“On my watch, no-one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice," she added.

In light of the news, Alec’s layer has issued a statement.

Luke Nikas, of Quinn Emanuel, said: “This decision distorts Halyna Hutchins’ tragic death and represents a terrible miscarriage of justice.

“Mr Baldwin had no reason to believe there was a live bullet in the gun – or anywhere on the movie set.

“He relied on the professionals with whom he worked, who assured him the gun did not have live rounds. We will fight these charges, and we will win.”

Meanwhile, Halyna’s family have shared a statement thanking the D.A.

"We want to thank the Santa Fe Sheriff and the District Attorney for concluding their thorough investigation and determining that charges for involuntary manslaughter are warranted for the killing of Halyna Hutchins with conscious disregard for human life,” Brian J. Panish, Founding Partner of Panish | Shea | Boyle | Ravipudi LLP, said on their behalf.

“Our independent investigation also supports charges are warranted. It is a comfort to the family that, in New Mexico, no one is above the law. We support the charges, will fully cooperate with this prosecution, and fervently hope the justice system works to protect the public and hold accountable those who break the law."

Shortly after Halyna’s death in 2021, Alec penned a lengthy letter addressing her untimely passing.

“To Whom It May Concern, this letter is written on behalf of the cast and crew of the film production, Rust. It has not been sanctioned or influenced in any way by the producers,” he began.

"We, the undersigned, believe the public narrative surrounding our workplace tragedy to be inadequate and wish to express a more accurate account of our experience.

"We are hurting from the loss of our friend and colleague, Halyna Hutchins. She was, in many ways, at the heart of our production, and losing her hurt every single one of us."

Alec went on to say that “it is common to work on unprofessional or hectic productions to gain experience and credits”, but insisted that “we do not feel that this set was a representation of the kind of conditions our unions are fighting against”.
