The Walking Dead viewers were shocked to witness the temporary exit of Maggie Rhee (played by Lauren Cohan) back in season nine of the AMC show.
During Rick Grimes’ (Andrew Lincoln) final, emotional episode, Maggie made some moves of her own.
The next episode saw the residents of Hilltop in a scenario five years in the future where Maggie was nowhere to be seen.
Apart from some vague references to her, Maggie wasn’t even mentioned in the show in the episodes that followed, causing many fans to speculate where she could be.
Fans were left wondering if she was killed off, or parted ways due to bad blood, and many assumed she had left to be with Georgie (Jayne Atkinson) who fans assumed was part of the Commonwealth community.
However, the latest casting announcement may have just hinted that Maggie could be making a comeback in season 10 alongside a newcomer.
The news comes after showrunner Angela Kang revealed that a new character will be making their series debut in the season premiere.
In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, she said: “We’ll be meeting the character Dante from the comics, he is this roguish, fast-talking, sometimes charming, sometimes annoying guy who can sometimes put his foot in his mouth, but is an interesting presence in the comics.”
Fans of the comics will know that Dante is a love interest of Maggie, but Angela explained that the show’s version of the character will play a slightly different role.
Angela explained: “He’s actually a love interest of Maggie. But in our world, the context is a little different, and he will play an important role in the story in Alexandria. So we’re excited about that.”
If the show was to follow in the path of the comics, Dante’s role in the Alexandria safe zone is a huge hint at Maggie’s return.
In the final panels of the comic, Maggie has been elected president of the enormous community.
Although the context of his character may be a little different to the one expected, the showrunner has not completely ruled out a romantic connection between Maggie and Dante.
This of course would mean, Maggie will have to make a much-anticipated return to the latest outing.
In a shocking move, fans were devastated to learn the series had come to an end in the last pages of issue 193 of the comic.
The final moments of the last chapter revealed the Commonwealth and Alexandria have become part of the same enormous safe zone, creating what is essentially a city.
Considering Maggie has left Hilltop in the TV show, this could be a huge hint at the direction of her final character arc.
Angela was also asked if there will be any other characters from the comics being cast on the TV show.
She told Entertainment Weekly: “There will be some other characters we meet down the line. But I don’t think I can quite talk about them yet. We’ll meet some really cool characters this year.”
The Walking Dead is expected to return to AMC later this year.
