The former Everton boss lasted just 10 months in the job before he was given the axe in 2014.
Moyes had dismissed many of the backroom staff including Sir Alex Ferguson's trusty right-hand man Mike Phelan.
The Red Devils ended that campaign seventh in the league and 15 points adrift of Arsenal occupying fourth spot.
But despite their dismal campaign, former keeper Schmeichel believes he deserved more time to grow into the role.
Speaking on Bein Sports, he said: "If we should have any regrets at Manchester United, it's that we only gave David Moyes seven months.
"I think we should have given him more time, accepted that results weren't going to be what we hoped and playing would have been a little different.
"I believe he would have grown into the role. He has the personality and the understanding. He had so many things to learn and no one to learn it from.
"He was left to run the football department on his own. From the clubs perspective we should never have dismissed him."
It's fair to say that United fans don't agree with his sentiments and took to Twitter to vent their frustrations at the comments.
One said: "In my time Schmeichel was the best United keeper I have seen, but he does talk some garbage as a pundit.
"Moyes was never the right appointment, he couldn't talk the talk never mind walk the walk."
Another bluntly added: "Worst pundit ever. Completely delusional."
