Elena Delle Donne on becoming sister Lizzie’s caretaker: ‘She’ll be with me’

WNBA star Elena Delle Donne will be featured on "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel" on Tuesday, May 21, and the Delaware native will discuss her close relationship with her older sister, who has developmental disabilities.

In a short HBO promotional video, Delle Donne, who plays for the Washington Mystics, discusses turning down the opportunity to play overseas during the WNBA offseason — a lucrative gig — in order to be with her sister Lizzie.

"Lizzie doesn't know that I play basketball," Delle Donne said. "She doesn't know that I'm 6-5. She just knows that I am one of her people and a really important person in her life.

"And that's all I want to be."

Lizzie has cerebral palsy and autism, in addition to being deaf and blind. In the promotional clip, Delle Donne said she and her wife Amanda plan to become Lizzie's full-time caretakers when her parents are unable to care for her.

"That's my girl," Delle Donne said. "I'm not going to let anybody else be taking Liz in. She'll be with me."

The episode is set to air at 10 p.m. on HBO on Tuesday.
