ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The emotions of a frustrating season got the better of Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia when he dropped an F-bomb in a live interview on the team's flagship station after Sunday's 14-13 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
The Lions were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss, and former Detroit offensive lineman Lomas Brown, now the team's color analyst, asked Patricia how that changes his approach to the final two games.
"Look, for us, it’s no different. We go out, we compete, we try to win and we try to (expletive) get better every week," Patricia said on WJR (760-AM), according to Jennifer Hammond of Fox 2 Detroit. "So we just got to make sure that we do a good job here of getting back to work here tomorrow."
The station posted audio of the interview online, with the swear word scrubbed from the file.
The Lions are 5-9 on the season and guaranteed to have their first losing record since 2015, when they fired general manager Martin Mayhew and team president Tom Lewand during the season.
Patricia, in his first season with the team, is not believed to be in any jeopardy of losing his job, but after 14 straight playoff appearances as an assistant with the New England Patriots, he has acknowledged this year's losing has been a difficult adjustment.
"I feel bad and horrible and it grinds on me and it just drives me to try to just do more or whatever I can to get us in the right spot," Patricia said in November.
Several Lions played blamed themselves for Sunday's loss, including linebacker Jarrad Davis, who said he "(expletive) up" by committing a late offsides penalty that helped the Bills close out the game.
In his postgame news conference with the media, Patricia said everyone on the team shared in the loss, and reiterated his disappointment at missing the playoffs.
"I don't like to lose, no matter what time of the year or whatever type of situation we're in," Patricia said. "We're trying to win every single game we can. That's it."
