Chick lit writers tell critics to hush

A panel of authors has defended the often-ridiculed chick lit genre to a crowd of literary enthusiasts at the Brisbane Writers Festival at South Bank.
In an event entitled Hush Your Mouth, popular novelist Rebecca Sparrow, indigenous writer Anita Heiss and new author Jessica Rudd argued the validity of chick lit, a women’s fiction sub-genre that addresses modern women’s issues with humour.
Though with the audience made up of mostly female fans, it was a bit like preaching to the choir.
Heiss stated the accessible literary style had granted her to make social change through her stories, engaging with an audience that are not otherwise engaging with Indigenous Australians.
“As readers we are conditioned to believe we can only learn history in a non-fiction or text book,” she said.
“It’s about the story and how you connect with readers.”
The panel advised readers not to think of reading their novels as a guilty pleasure.
“It’s not porn,” Rudd said.
The daughter of Kevin Rudd is on the publicity trail for her prophetic “political chick lit” novel about a prime minister who is toppled by his female treasurer, but she assured the crowd the prescient storyline and the events that followed were pure coincidence.
“You write what you know, and I know politics,” Rudd said.
“My characters are all fictional. They are like imaginary friends to me.”
