Christopher Polk / Getty Images

Rapper M.I.A. raises her middle finger during the Super Bowl halftime show on Sunday.

For all the pomp and excess of Madonna’s Super Bowl halftime extravaganza a single extended middle finger by guest singer M.I.A. is likely to be the most remembered piece of the show.

The gesture, accompanied by a barely disguised expletive, came during a performance of Madonna’s new single, “Give Me All Your Luvin.’” At the end of her lines, M.I.A. appeared to sing “I do not give a (expletive),” even though it was hard to hear clearly.

The incident was reminiscent of Janet Jackson’s infamous “wardrobe malfunction” eight years ago — a surprise risque moment in front of tens of millions of unsuspecting viewers. The brief exposure of Jackson’s nipple during the 2004 halftime show raised a storm of controversy and put CBS in hot water with the Federal Communications Commission.

The Super Bowl, shown on NBC this year, is routinely viewed by more than 100 million people, the biggest TV event of the year.

“We apologize for the inappropriate gesture that aired during halftime,” NBC spokesman Christopher McCloskey said. “It was a spontaneous gesture that our delay system caught late.”

(TODAY.com is part of a joint venture between NBC and Microsoft.)

The screen briefly went blurred after M.I.A.’s gesture in what was a late attempt — by less than a second — to cut out the camera shot. The NFL, which produces the show, had no immediate comment.

The British singer M.I.A. is ideal known for her 2007 hit “Paper Planes,” a Grammy nominee for record of the year that memorably features a sample of the Clash song, “Straight to Hell.” It was featured on the soundtrack to the motion picture “Slumdog Millionaire.”

Did you catch M.I.A.’s naughty gesture? Share your thoughts on Facebook.

Posted in Fashion / Fashion blog / Fashion industry / Topical fashion discussions

If you’re the apotheosis of British eccentricity – the veritable King of quirky twists – you can’t just open up any old store. Ask anyone who’s ever wandered into a Paul Smith store in any city of the world, and they’ll tell you: it’s not your average clothing boutique. Each of Smith’s retail spaces is a feat of design as eclectic and creative as the man himself, with art-lined walls and antique furniture; perhaps you might even stumble upon a vintage bicycle or signature-striped Mini Cooper. You never really know. All you can know is that you’re just as likely to walk out with some household ornament, artwork or uncommon piece of reading material as you are to walk out with a velvet blazer or pair of to-die-for leather brogues.

And so, having decided that it was time for Australia to have such a retail space, the question for Paul Smith was inevitably where? The brand have now announced that ever-important location. And it’s a good one.

Zombies and Jedis and Shakespeare, oh my! Here’s our look ahead at the upcoming week in entertainment.

TVWell, Sophia will not be returning. (At this point, there is no way that’s a spoiler!) But the zombies and desperate humans of “The Walking Dead” are about to do battle once more as the show returns after a midseason break. Here’s a jump-cut filled sneak peek, and here is a slightly longer scene. Loyal viewers know what to anticipate from this show by now. Gore, fear, drama, conflict and occasional well contamination. I would not drink that if I were you. (Feb. 12, 9 p.m., AMC.)

”Celebrity Apprentice” just keeps finding B-list stars willing to get bossed around by hairmaster Donald Trump. This season includes “Star Trekker” George Takei, singers Clay Aiken and Debbie Gibson, model Cheryl Tiegs and more. They’re competing for a $250,000 donation to the charity of their choice. (Feb. 12, 9 p.m., NBC.)

MoviesThe “Star Wars” prequels were not that well-reviewed when they were first released, but that hasn’t stopped George Lucas and crew from redoing them in 3-D. 1999′s “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace” has some moments that could look cool in the added dimension (Darth Maul’s double-ended lightsaber!) and some that, well, won’t. Jar-Jar Binks, we are looking at you. (Feb. 10)

Who’s ready for a tearjerker? Bring your Kleenex box to “The Vow,” starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. When she loses her memory, her husband must court her all over again. Based on a true story. (Feb. 10)

Don’t get confused by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s dominating presence in ads for “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.” The Rock was not even in the first “Journey” movie. But now here he is, as a man who travels with his young stepson, a helicopter pilot, and the pilot’s young daughter to an island straight out of Jules Verne’s stories. (Feb. 10)

DVDTo be Shakespeare, or not to be Shakespeare? “Anonymous” tackles the famed literary rumor that the Bard of Avon did not really write his famed plays. Rhys Ifans stars as Edward de Vere, the Earl of Oxford, who’s depicted not only as the real author of Shakespeare’s works, but as a lover of Queen Elizabeth. (On DVD and Blu-ray Feb. 7)

Love means never having to state “do you have that on Blu-ray?” Classic 1970 romance “Love Story” is now on Blu-ray, just in time for Valentine’s Day. The American Film Institute chose it as #9 on their list of the 100 greatest love stories of all time. (“Casablanca” and “Gone With the Wind” top the list, of course.) (On Blu-ray Feb. 7)

February 4, 2012 — Updated 1323 GMT (2123 HKT)

Zalman King poses outside an unidentified location in the 1970s.

Zalman King was an actor in several 1960s TV showsHe later produced several films, including “Nine and 1/2 Weeks”His directing credits include the erotic drama, “Wild Orchid”Charlie Sheen remembers King as a “brilliant and noble soul”

Los Angeles (CNN) — Zalman King, a onetime actor who went on to produce and direct numerous films including “Wild Orchid,” died Friday after a lengthy battle with cancer, his son-in-law said.

After fighting cancer for six years, King died Friday morning at his home in Santa Monica, California, son-in-law Allison Burnett told CNN.

His wife and longtime contributor, writer-director Patricia Louisiana Knopp, was by his side.

Born Zalman Lefkovitz, King broke into Hollywood in the 1960s as an actor with roles on several TV series including “The Alfred Hitchcock Hour,” “Bonanza,” “Gunsmoke” and “The Young Lawyers,” according to the on-line Internet Movie Database website, imdb.com.

He produced several films in the 1980s, including the erotic drama “9½ Weeks” starring Kim Basinger and Mickey Rourke. And in 1989, King moved behind the camera to direct “Wild Orchid,” written by him and his wife and featuring Rourke and Jacqueline Bisset.

According to Burnett, late director Stanley Kubrick would call King “every night” while shooting “Eyes Wide Shut,” starring Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, to get ideas on shooting erotic scenes.

King also knew Martin Sheen for decades, as well as his son Charlie Sheen, according to Burnett.

The former “Platoon,” “Wall Street” and “Two and a Half Men” star lauded King as a “brilliant and noble soul” in a statement Friday on his website.

“My dear friend of 40 years, Zalman King, just lost his battle with cancer,” Charlie Sheen wrote. “Fought like a recon marine til the bitter end.”

Ben Gazzara, whose powerful dramatic performances brought an intensity to a variety of roles and made him a memorable presence in such iconic productions over the decades as the original Cat on a Hot Tin Roof on Broadway and the film The Big Lebowski, has died at age 81.

Longtime family friend Suzanne Mados stated Gazzara died Friday in Manhattan. Mados, who owned the Wyndham Hotel, where celebrities such as Peter Falk and Martin Sheen stayed, stated he died after being placed in hospice care for cancer. She and her husband helped marry Gazzara and his wife, German-born Elke Krivat, at their hotel.

Gazzara was a proponent of method acting, in which the performer attempts to take on the thoughts and emotions of the character he is playing, and it helped him achieve stardom early in his career with two stirring Broadway performances.

In 1955, he originated the role of Brick Pollitt, the disturbed alcoholic son and failed football star in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. He left the show after only seven months to take on an equally challenging role, Johnny Pope, the drug addict in A Hatful of Rain. It earned him his first of three Tony Award nominations.

In 1965, he moved on to TV stardom in Run for Your Life, a drama about a workaholic lawyer who, diagnosed with a terminal illness, quits his job and embarks on a globe-trotting attempt to squeeze a lifetime of adventures into the one or two years he has left. He was twice nominated for Emmys during the show’s three-year run.

Gazzara made his motion picture debut in 1957 in The Strange One, Calder Willingham’s bitter drama about brutality at a Southern military school. He had previously played the lead role of the psychopathic cadet, Jocko de Paris, on Broadway in Willingham’s stage version of the story, End of Man.

He followed that film with Anatomy of a Murder, in which he played a man on trial for murdering a tavern keeper who had been accused of raping his wife.

After Run for Your Life ended in 1968, Gazzara spent the rest of his career alternating between movies and the stage, even though rarely with the critical acclaim he had enjoyed during his early years.

In the 1970s, he teamed with his friend director John Cassavetes for three films, The Killing of a Chinese Bookie and Opening Night. In another Cassavetes film, he appeared with Falk, and the two became friends (it was Cassavetes who introduced them to the Wyndham Hotel, according to a 1982 article in New York magazine).

Gena Rowlands appeared with Gazzara in Opening Night, which also starred Cassavetes. Cassavetes and Rowlands were married; he died in 1989. Falk died last year.

“It breaks my heart to have this era come to an end. Ben meant so much to all of us. To our families. To John. To Peter. To have them gone now is devastating to me,” she stated in a statement.

She stated her prayers and thoughts went out to “all his loyal and wonderful fans throughout the world.”

Rita Moreno, who played Gazzara’s wife in the 2000 film Blue Moon, said, “He was a wonderful man, and I so enjoyed working with him. I wish I could have had the pleasure more often.”

Other Gazzara films included The Bridge at Remagen, The Young Doctors, They All Laughed, The Thomas Crown Affair, If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium, The Spanish Prisoner, Stag and Road House. He also made several films in Italy.

He appeared on Broadway in revivals of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, Awake and Sing! Strange Interlude and several other plays.

Gazzara began acting in tv in 1952 with roles on the series Danger and Kraft Television Theater. Before landing Run for Your Life, he played a police detective in the series Arrest and Trial, which lasted two seasons.

Parents were immigrants from Sicily

Born Biagio Anthony Gazzara in New York on Aug. 28, 1930, he grew up on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in a cold-water flat with a bathtub in the kitchen. His parents were immigrants from Sicily who met and married in New York, and his first language was Italian. Although he was baptized under his birth name, his parents always called him Ben or Benny.

As a child he became fascinated with movies, and after giving his first performance, in a Boys Club play, he knew he had found his life’s work.

“I disliked high school,” he once said, “and after two years of it I left without telling anyone at home.”

Instead he spent his days in motion picture theatres.

He entered Erwin Piscator’s Dramatic Workshop in 1948. Eighteen months later he auditioned for the Actors Studio run by Lee Strasberg and was accepted.

The school was a beehive of activity in those days, turning out such followers of method acting as Marlon Brando, Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Barbara Bel Geddes, Shelly Winters, Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Rod Steiger and Julie Harris.

“There’s a lot of voodoo about the Actors Studio,” Gazzara told The Associated Press in 1966. “In the ideal sense it was a place for professionals to stay in touch with their craft, where newcomers and professionals mingled, to grow, to try parts they would never get in the professional theater and to even fall on their face.”

Gazzara’s first two marriages, to actresses Louise Erikson and Janice Rule, ended in divorce.

While filming Inchon in Korea in 1981, he met Krivat. They married the following year, and the union endured.

“Elke saved my life,” Gazzara stated in 1999. “When I met her, I was drinking too much, fooling around too much, killing myself. She put romance and hope back in my life.”

He adopted Krivat’s daughter, Danja, as his own. She recalled on Friday that he was a “complex soul” and that his role as a dad to her and his own daughter was challenging.

“I adored Ben, and so did his daughter,” she said. “But we both had difficulty with him … I think the difficulty lay in his complexity of being an actor and those layers that you have, that you bring with you.”

Besides Danja, Gazzara is survived by his wife, daughter Elizabeth and a brother.

Pat Sajak, right, made a visit to the White House Friday and posed with the White House’s counselor to the chief of staff, David Lane, second from right, and two friends.

By Ali Weinberg and Kristen Welker, NBC News

“Would you like to purchase a vowel, Mr. President?”

“Wheel of Fortune” host Pat Sajack did not actually meet with the leader of the free world, but he did stop by the White House Friday for a “purely social” visit.

NBC staff spottedhim strolling down the White House driveway toward the northwest gate exit. Sajak and two friends had just completed lunch with David Lane, the counsel to the White House Chief of Staff.

The group did not reveal what was on the menu, but chances are it contained far less alcohol than Sajak used to imbibe between tapings during the early days of the game show, as he recently revealed to the hosts of an ESPN2 program.

“Wheel of Fortune” used to tape multiple episodes a night, Sajak revealed, so between shows he and co-host Vanna White would hit a local Mexican joint and have a few margaritas.

“Vanna and I would go and have two or three or six and then come and do the last shows and have trouble recognizing the alphabet,” he stated on the ESPN2 show.

Sajak later backtracked a bit fromhis comments, telling ABC News Radio he might have embellished the story a little.

“To be honest, and I hate to put an end to this drinking thing because we’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of it, but it was probably a half a dozen times we went across the street and had a margarita,” he said. “It is funny that on a tiny show on a tiny cable network, we’re doing a fun interview, two guys joking around and making a joke about having margaritas thirty years ago and it turns into, you know, a thing for a day.”

When asked by NBC Friday to comment on stated “thing,” Sajak said, “You want me to confirm that I had a margarita 30 years ago? I can confirm that I did.”

Danield Radcliffe in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.”

Daniel Radcliffe admitted he was drunk while filming some scenes for the “Harry Potter” movies during a period in his life where he was drinking “nightly,” the young star stated in an interview.

“I have a very addictive personality. It was a problem. People with problems like that are very adept at hiding it. It was bad. I do not want to go into details, but I drank a lot and it was daily — I mean nightly,” Radcliffe stated to British celebrity news magazine Heat earlier this week.

“I can honestly state I never drank at work on ‘Harry Potter.’ I went into work still drunk, but I never drank at work. I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes,” the 22-year-old actor said.

“I can also be quite insecure. A lot of actors have self-doubt. I live under that the whole time, and it’s how I function best. I think she puts up with a lot; she states she doesn’t,” stated Radcliffe.

The “Harry Potter” star, who has received critical praise for his theatre work in the Broadway and West End productions “Equus” and “How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying,” is currently on the promotional rounds for his film, “The Woman in Black,” out in U.S. theatres on Friday.

Are you surprised by his revelation? In retrospect, can you think of any scenes where Radcliffe appeared out of it? Tell us on Facebook.

Next time you flip through the song choices at a karaoke bar, remember to select carefully. Your health may depend on it.

William Oller, Sr., 70, was jailed after shooting son William Jr., 50, at a residence in Shingletown, Calif.

According to the police report, on Jan. 26, Oller Jr. had been singing a Kenny Chesney country tune via karaoke when Oller Sr. left the home briefly, saying “I’m gonna shut you up.” He returned with a handgun and fired multiple times at his son, striking him in the arm. Oller Jr. was taken to the hospital, but at least one bullet remains in his shoulder. Oller Sr. was also treated for a gunshot wound and then taken to jail.

In an interview with KRCR TV in Redding, Calif., Oller Jr. states he cannot remember what Chesney song he was singing at the time. He states he doesn’t believe his dad knew what he was doing and that recent strokes may have contributed to the elder Oller’s anger. He stated in the past, his dad has even coached his singing.

“He do not need to spend his last days in prison or jail,” Oller Jr. states of his father. “He needs to spend them with his family.”

What karaoke song tests your patience (not that you’d ever shoot anybody)? Tell us on Facebook.

Posted in Fashion / Copenhagen fashion week / Fashion blog / Fashion photos / Runway & fashion shows

From the opener – a dress haphazardly fringed and embellished, worn with nude socks and heavy flat black shoes – Anne Sofie Madsen had it nailed. The ‘it’ in question is the elusive space between darkly avant guarde and coolly wearable, and while the more sparkling circus-like aesthetic of the opening piece didn’t return through the rest of her fall 2012 show at Copenhagen fashion week (CFW) show, the remainder of the outfits were equally on-target.

These were intricate, bordering on Gothic but tipping a hat to the futurist. Polar bears reared up on some snow-capped pieces while others were splodged with galaxies of paint, or wrought with alien-faced emotion. Texture is certainly key for Madsen, and these darkly themed pieces showed their craftsmanship through the 3-dimensional details.
