Sheridan Smith and Stephen Fry have revealed they were trapped in a lift – just moments before appearing on The One Show.

Hosts Ronan Keating and Alex Jones were preparing to welcome the actors onto the sofa to discuss their upcoming projects.

When they didn’t show up on time, Alex said to BBC viewers: ‘We are having a night here.

‘Stephen Fry and Sheridan Smith are due on this sofa. Obviously it’s a live programme – they are stuck in the lift.’

As Ronan descended into giggles beside her, she said: ‘For the time being we will go on to a film.’

Hosts Ronan Keating and Alex Jones were preparing to welcome the actors onto the sofa to discuss their upcoming projects. When they didn’t show up on time, Alex said to BBC viewers: ‘We are having a night here.’

Ronan added: ‘And they’re fine! They’re absolutely fine. Hopefully they’ll be here before the end of the show.’

When they finally arrived on the sofa, Stephen made a joke about the sitauion: ‘Santa’s sleigh ride got a little stuck, I think the reindeer were drunk or something.

Alex jumped in, commenting that the picture of the pair in the lift is ‘priceless’.

Stephen added: ‘Usually if I get stuck in a lift I assume it is my weight but this was a good lift so I don’t know what went wrong. But we kept our spirits high.’

Sheridan quipped: ‘We kept laughing!’

Sheridan’s appearance on The One Show was to promote her new Paramount+ drama The Castaways, which launches on December 26.

When asked how she would cope on a desert island as herself and not her character, she joked: ‘well I was rubbish in the lift, so I would be useless on a desert island!’

Stephen added: ‘Usually if I get stuck in a lift I assume it is my weight but this was a good lift so I don’t know what went wrong. But we kept our spirits high.’

Viewers were confused as the duo introduced video clip after video clip rather than welcoming on their named guests

It comes after Sheridan revealed she lost ‘so much weight’ filming The Castaways, a new drama for Paramount+ based on Lucy Clarke’s bestselling novel, in Greece.

The actress put the weight loss down to the active role in which she plays missing person Lori Holme.

Speaking to Radio Times magazine, she said: ‘I had a challenge this year, the most physical part I’ve ever done.

‘Running up and down a beach, climbing trees to pick fruit, jumping off cliffs, going through jungle, falling over, cutting my legs, then they say, ‘Go again,’ a few times more. I lost so much weight!’

Sheridan, who has portrayed the wife of train robber Ronnie Biggs and Cilla Black, said she enjoyed playing a character who isn’t wearing thick make up or stylish clothes.

The star once said merrily that she was generally cast as ‘old scrubs, chavs and slappers’.

She said of playing a rough castaway: ‘It’s so much fun! Hair wet, dirty, scratched, shorts or bits of clothing from the luggage in the plane, getting more and more wild as Lori goes from wallflower to beach-warrior-queen! That transition was such fun.

‘I was covered in freckles, and it’s quite nice having no face make-up, just yourself.’

Playing a character who spends so much time on the beach did have its down sides though – covering up her numerous tattoos.

‘I had a call three hours before anyone else,’ she said.

‘I couldn’t use my usual stuff to cover them up, it had to be waterproof! So three people were dabbing away every day to cover it all. I never regretted my tats so much – I’ll never have another one.’

The One Show airs weekdays from 7pm on BBC One.
