Honor dropped for German socialite over friendship with Bannon, AIDS comments

El Museo del Barrio in East Harlem has nixed plans to honor Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis at its May gala after a backlash.

Critics complained about the German socialite’s friendship with former White House honcho Steve Bannon — and for saying in 2001 that the AIDS epidemic happened because “blacks like to copulate a lot.” (Von Thurn und Taxis, a “punk princess” turned conservative Catholic, also reportedly counts Hillary Clinton as a friend.)

The museum told Page Six, “El Museo del Barrio was established to advance and elevate the work of Latinx [a gender-neutral term] and Latin American artists. Inclusion, civil rights and diversity are core to our mission. After recently learning about comments made by HSH Princess Gloria von Thurn und Taxis that conflict with our values, El Museo rescinded its invitation to honor her.”

Von Thurn und Taxis told the New York Times in a statement, “My conservative religious views have absolutely no impact on my open mind on cultural diversity and inclusion. I have been friends with all sorts of people of different political and religious views all my life.”
